Justice in India: - An Unrealistic Dream

                                                                             - by Jahnvi Kumawat

Justice in India has been unrealistic dream to most of the victims especially those who have been raped. Real justice is barely distributed even though there are strict laws such as the Criminal Law Amendment Act 2013. The rich and powerful use their money and political power to cover crime and intimidate the victims and bend the law to their wishes. The victims do not get to report many rape cases due to the fear of harassment by the society and the police. Even in instances where they find themselves in court, the rich people pay enormous bribes to police officers, lawyers and even judges to extend the cases or exonerate themselves. This destroys the body of trust that normal citizens have on the judicial system. Years pass and victims continue hopping frantically between one court meeting to another, only to get nowhere. Rapists go about in freedom and survivor struggle to deal with trauma and also shame. The real justice needs an unintimidated and non-corrupt justice system where no one is out of the law. All individuals, irrespective of their strength or influence must be punished over the crime they committed in order to give a safer India to not only just for women but for men, children and LGBTQIA+ communities and ensure that people can still trust the judiciary.
